The same questions, on both sides of care

Face-to-face quantitative survey at care facilities, with more than 3,000 interviews
Context

The starting point

Some health issues stir up strong opinions on every side. Experts weigh in, the press picks it up, social media amplifies it, and technical topics become part of everyday conversation.

A national health organization needed to look past that debate and answer a harder question: what do the people closest to the issue actually think? That meant both the professionals who provide care and the patients and companions who receive it.

The public debate showed the loudest opinions. The organization needed to know the most widely held ones.

Design

A mirrored questionnaire

The study surveyed the two groups separately, but with matching questions, so each topic could be analyzed from both sides of the same relationship.

That design showed where professionals and patients thought alike and where their views diverged. For a representative organization, the comparison provides something no single opinion can: context. A position that seems dominant within one group can carry very different weight when set against the other group’s view.

The questionnaires covered behaviors, prevention and the way decisions about health care are made.

Fieldwork

Fieldwork that matched the question

To reach people where this reality plays out, interviews were conducted face to face at the care facilities themselves.

That made the fieldwork especially complex: more than 3,000 interviews with two different audiences, in regions and municipalities of all sizes and profiles, all within the routine of places where care can’t stop. Every interview had to produce data that was comparable both between the two audiences and across Brazil’s very different realities.

Analytics

By region, by municipality, by profile

Results were analyzed by region, by size and type of municipality and by respondent profile. In a country this diverse, knowing where opinions shift is as important as knowing the national result.

Result

What changed for the customer

The organization gained a structured body of evidence on issues that, outside of research, were mostly debated on the basis of impressions and opinions. The analysis clearly showed where the two audiences agreed and which issues divided them most.

What we took from this project

Research doesn’t need to eliminate disagreements. It needs to make them understandable.
